The Peppercorn Class A1 were designed by Arthur Peppercorn whilst he was Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER, but built during the early British Railways era. A fiftieth example, Tornado (named after the Panavia Tornado) is however being built by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust.
