LNER 4464
From Railways
Bittern Number 4464 was built at doncaster works in December 1937. Bittern was withdrawn in September 1966, this was one of the very last A4's to be withdrawn from British Railways.
Bittern was purchased soon after by Geoff Dury which it was kept for a period of time at York MPD - (now the national Raiway Museum). It then was return to service in the early 1970's to haul special tours. After a few years it was withdrawn because of cracked wheels.
Bittern was however cosmetically resotred in the 1980's to pose as silver link for a while.
After this a overhall was started after the NELPG had aquiredBittern after Geoff Durys death, however little etempt was made.
it was then sold off to Dr tony marchingham (the last owner of flying scotsman) and it was planned to be resotred, but with efforts mostly on flying scotsman this never happened so it was left at southhall in bits.
In the year 2000 Dr Marchinham sold Bittern to it current owner, Jermey Hosking which a full restoreation started in 2000 - May 2007 which Bittern was fully resotred to operating condition.
It's current home base is at the Mid Hants Railway
