In 1945 Edward Thompson produced his most controversial "rebuild" to form his new Class A1 (Class A1/1 from 1947). The original Gresley Pacific, No.4470 Great Northern was rebuilt with an A4 boiler, albeit without streamlining. Although scheduled, no other such conversions of the Gresley A1's occurred, the remaining examples of that class becoming Class A10 until being rebuilt to Class A3. Withdrawn 19 November 1962.
