Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway

The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway was a pre-grouping (1923) British railway company. It was created by the Act of 9th July 1847 by the renaming of the Manchester and Leeds Railway, which under the same Act also incorporated the:
The Manchester and Leeds absorbtion of the two above companies led to it renaming itself to better portray the area it now served.
The Manchester and Leeds had previously amalgamated with the:
- Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal Navigation and Railway (Amalgamated August 1846),
- West Riding Union Railway (Amalgamated November 1846)

On 1st January 1922 the L&Y merged with the London and North Western Railway, the resultant company (also known as the London and North Western) was grouped into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923. Several key positions in the expanded L&NWR were taken by former L&Y men.

The football team of its Carriage and Wagon Works at Newton Heath, Manchester, evolved into Manchester United F.C.
