Manchester and Leeds Railway

The Manchester and Leeds Railway was incorporated in 1836 and opened in stages between July 1839 and March 1841.

It eventually formed the major component of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, although it is debateable if the operation was a merger or renaming as far as the M & L was concerned.

It absorbed the following companies on the way :

There was also a somewhat complicated absorbtion of the Preston and Wyre Railway, Harbour and Dock company.
